JK en Florida

¡Hola Jokers! La pasada semana, entre el 21 y el 28 de enero estuvimos ni más ni menos que en Florida, en Estados Unidos, de vacaciones. No hemos tenido tiempo de hacer un vídeo, pero sí algunas fotos, así que ¡vamos a contaros lo que hicimos al otro lado del océano!

Hi Jokers! Last week, between January 21st and 28th, we were on holidays in none other than Florida, United States. We didn't have time to film a video, but we took some pictures and we're going to tell you what we did on the other side of the ocean!

Empezamos pasando un par de días con unos amigos que hicimos en Couchsurfing, en Fort Myers, que es una forma fantástica de conocer gente del lugar. Nos tomamos algo en un bar, fuimos de senderismo por el parque "6 millas de cipreses" y nos enseñaron una tienda dedicada a la naranja, "Sun Harvest Citrus", que ofrecía unas muestras gratuitas de una deliciosa mezcla de zumo de naranja con otras frutas.

También descubrimos una tienda de artículos de fiesta, donde tenían de todo... Disfraces, cubiertos, platos, artículos de broma, de San Valentín, de San Patricio, azúcar para repostería... ¡y todo disponible en varios colores! Estos americanos son así, en una tienda te puedes encontrar cualquier producto que imagines. ¡Viva el consumismo!

Después nos dirigimos al sur, intentamos buscar caimanes en los Everglades, pero no hubo suerte de ver ninguno de cerca... aquello es tan inmenso que no sabes dónde ir. Otra cosa que tiene Estados Unidos: todo es enorme. Las carreteras, interminables; los coches son tan grandes como camiones y los camiones son tan grandes como montañas.

Pasamos una noche en Key Largo, donde hacen unos exquisitos langostinos rebozados en coco. Estuvimos otras dos noches en Key West, el extremo sur del estado, donde hicimos paddleboard entre los manglares, un interesante ecosistema que protege a las islas de los huracanes y la erosión.

También probamos, según Karla, el mejor sandwich cubano en Sandy's. Burritos, tacos de atún, pizza... Mmmm ¡ahora tengo hambre!

Por último alquilamos una habitación en AirBNB en Miami Beach, paseamos por Ocean Drive, vimos en concierto a Love Fist, fuimos al club Malibú con Lance Vance, robé un coche, trabajé de taxista y repartidor de helados, piloté el helicóptero de la policía, tanques.... espera.. ¿eso no es GTA: Vice City?

Florida tiene mucha influencia latina, allí vive mucha gente de Cuba, México y otros países de América. Se habla mucho español e incluso mezclas de spanglish. Pero hay muchas diferencias entre los distintos dialectos. Por ejemplo, me pidieron que me quitara los "anteojos" para una foto, lo que en España llamamos "gafas". Curiosamente, el español que Karla está aprendiendo en Duolingo es un español muy latino, y por otro lado el inglés que yo he aprendido gracias a las series y películas de Hollywood, es un inglés muy americano, por lo que confundo "mobile" (teléfono móvil en inglés británico) con "cellphone" (americano). Pero entre los dos, cubrimos un amplio rango de ambos idiomas, ¿no creéis?

We started spending a couple of days with friends that we made in Fort Myers via Couchsurfing, which is an awesome way of meeting locals. We had a few drinks, went hiking to the 'six mile cypress slough preserve' and they showed us a store specialising in oranges, 'Sun Harvest Citrus', that offered free samples of a delicious blend of orange juice with other fruits.

We also were in a party store, where they had everything... costumes, cutlery, plates, practical joke items, Valentines Day decorations, Saint Patrick's decorations, icing for baking... and everything was available in every possible colour! Americans are that way: in a single store you will find anything you can imagine. Long live consumerism!

Then we headed south. We tried to find alligators in the Everglades, but we weren't lucky enough to see any up close... It's so immense that you don't know where to go. That's another thing about the United States: everything is enormous. The roads, endless; the cars as big as trucks, and the lorries as big as mountains.

We spent a night in Key Largo, where they make exquisite coconut shrimp. We spent a couple of nights in Key West, the southernmost point of the stretch of islands, where we went paddleboarding through the mangroves, an interesting ecosystem that protects the islands from hurricanes and erosion.

We also tasted, according to Karla, the best Cuban sandwich she had ever had at Sandy's Cafe. Burritos, tuna tacos, pizza... mmm now I'm hungry!

Lastly we rented a room on AirBNB in Miami Beach. We walked along Ocean Drive, went to a Love Fist concert, I robbed a car, worked as a cab driver and an ice cream delivery man, I piloted the police helicopter, tanks... oh wait... wasn't that GTA: Vice City? Oops!

Florida has an important Latin influence, there are lots of people from Cuba, Mexico and other American countries living there. Spanish is widely spoken and even mixes of Spanglish. But there are huge differences between dialects. For example, they asked me to remove my 'anteojos' (glasses in American Spanish) for a picture, while in Spain they're called 'gafas'. Curiously, the Spanish Karla is learning on Duolingo is a very Latin-american Spanish, and the English that I've learnt thanks to Hollywood series and movies is very American, so I still get 'mobile' (british english) and 'cellphone' (american english) wrong. But between both of us we cover a wide range of both languages, don't you think?

#3 Vlogueando sobre Hogwarts / Vlogging about Hogwarts

¿Habéis visto ya el tercer episodio de CHATconJK? ¿A qué esperas? Ahí arriba lo tienes. No te pierdas el desenlace al episodio 2, donde empezamos una pequeña excursión a un sitio secreto de Inglaterra...

Vale, no era un sitio tan secreto, era el tour de los Studios de Harry Potter de Warner Bros, donde se construyeron los escenarios y el atrezzo, ¡incluso vimos el Expreso de Hogwarts!

Debo avisar de que nuestro canal no hace ningún tipo de publicidad encubierta hacia Harry Potter, aunque nos llamemos CHATconJK y su autora se la conozca como JK Rowling, sólo es una coincidencia. No tenemos ninguna relación con esa franquicia, únicamente somos fans, pues leímos los libros desde pequeños. De hecho, justamente ahora mismo estoy leyendo "Los Cuentos de Beedle el Bardo" en inglés, para mejorar mi comprensión lectora.

Esa aclaración realmente la mencioné mientras grabábamos el vídeo, pero la tuve que retirar del montaje final porque el vídeo ya era demasiado largo, ¿no os parece? ¿Os gustan más los vídeos más cortos? ¿Qué opináis del estilo de este vídeo, más natural e improvisado, en el que contamos lo que hemos hecho en ese día?

Estoy seguro de que a Karla le gusta mucho, porque antes de dormir le gusta que le diga, en español, lo que hemos hecho juntos ese día, para así mejorar su comprensión de español. Y vosotros, ¿qué pensáis de esta especie de vlog? Queremos saber vuestra opinión o si preferís el estilo más estructurado como en los otros episodios.

Have you already seen the third episode of CHATconJK? What are you waiting for? You have it right up there. Don't miss the outcome of episode 2, where we started a little trip to a secret destination in England...

Okay, it wasn't such a secret place, it was the Warner Bros' Harry Potter Studio Tour, where they built the sets and props, we even saw the Hogwarts' Express!

I should clarify that our channel is not doing any sponsored advertising for Harry Potter. Even though we're called CHATconJK and its author is of course JK Rowling, that is simply a coincidence. We have no relation to the franchise, we're just fans, because we read the books when we were young. Actually, as of right now, I'm reading "The Tales of Beedle the Bard" in English, to improve my English reading skills

That clarification was originally mentioned while we were filming the video, but I had to remove it from the final cut because the video was already too long, don't you think? Do you prefer shorter videos? What do you think about the style of this video? Is it more natural and improvised when we tell you about what we did that day?

I have no doubt that Karla enjoys it: before going to sleep each night she likes me to tell her, in Spanish, what we did together that day to help her improve her Spanish listening skills. #2 On the topic of counties... / Hablando de condados...

Episode two of CHATconJK is now live! I wanted to take some time to qualify some of the things discussed in this episode.

Javi talks about some of the different provinces in Spain. Many have capital cities that share the same name as the province (e.g. Malaga in Malaga), while others have completely different names to their respective province (e.g. Logroño in La Rioja).

In response to that (me thinking I'm a know-it-all) I remark that it's simply not the case in England. Counties and capitals don't share names, period. Of course, this isn't remotely true!

For instance, we have a lot of counties with the word "Shire" in them. Shire is the original word that was used for counties in England. The word "county" only really came into vogue during the Norman Conquest of England.

Some of the most well known 'Shires' in England include Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire and of course, the one I was talking about in the video, Hertfordshire. Each of these have capitals that have a strong relation to its county name: Oxford, Cambridge and Hertford respectively. So with that in mind, you will really have to excuse my "blonde moment" during the video!

Finally, if you were curious about England and its "provinces" (as I was unable to answer this in the video), to confuse matters further, we call these "regions" in England and they have very unoriginal names including: South East, London, North West, East of England, and so on. On the bright side, at least this unoriginality of naming means you will always know what part of the country you are in, so long as you know the name of your region! ¡El episodio 2 de CHATconJK ya está disponible! Quería tomarme un momento para precisar algunas de las cosas que decimos en este episodio.

Javi habla sobre algunas de las diferentes provincias de España. Muchas de las cuales tienen capitales que comparten el mismo nombre que la provincia (por ejemplo Málaga en Málaga), mientras que otras tienen nombres completamente diferentes a sus respectivas provincias (como Logroño en La Rioja).

En respuesta a eso (haciéndome la sabelotodo) dije simplemente que no es el caso en Inglaterra. Los condados y sus capitales no comparten nombres, y punto. Por supuesto, ¡no es totalmente cierto!

Por ejemplo, tenemos un montón de condados con la palabra "shire" (comarca) en ellos. Comarca es la palabra original que se usaba para los condados de Inglaterra. La palabra "condado" sólo se empezó a usar durante la Conquista Normanda de Inglaterra.

Algunas de las comarcas 'shire' más conocidas de Inglaterra incluyen Oxfordshire, Cambridgeshire y por supuesto, la que menciono en el vídeo, Hertfordshire. Cada una de ellas tienen capitales que guardan una fuerte relación al nombre del condado: Oxford, Cambridge y Hertford respectivamente. Así que con eso en mente, ¡tendréis que disculpar mi "momento rubia" en el vídeo!

Finalmente, si aún tenéis curiosidad sobre Inglaterra y sus "provincias" (ya que no fui capaz de responder en este vídeo), para confundir aún más las cosas, las llamamos "regiones" en Inglaterra y tienen nombres muy poco originales como: Sudeste, Londres, Noroeste, Este de Inglaterra, y así. Algo bueno es que esta falta de originalidad nombrando  significa que siempre sabrás en qué parte del país estás, ¡siempre que sepas el nombre de la región! #1 Fun Facts / Anécdotas

I thought I would share some fun facts about episode one of CHATconJK. Like much of the content myself and Javi create, a lot of the events depicted are inspired by real situations we have been in or conversations that we have had.

For instance, the cut scene where you see me drinking several gin and tonics (taking me from zero to bilingual in a short space of time) did actually happen earlier this year when we were out celebrating Javi's birthday in Spain. Initially I was feeling really shy around his friends, but I quickly learned that a little bit of "dutch courage" really can go a long way!

The other real event that we touch upon in this video is Javi's fondness for running barefoot. He has in fact run  races barefoot in the past, as he insists it is more natural and healthier for the feet, and he goes running barefoot whenever possible. It was one of the first things I learned about him when we were getting to know each other, and I still think he's a "Weird-O" for doing it!

We will be shortly launching episode two of CHATconJK which is about our recent trip to the Warner Bros. Harry Potter studios near London. Make sure to stay tuned to find out how the day unfolded!

He pensado que podría compartir algunas anécdotas del primer episodio de CHATconJK. Como casi todo el contenido que Javi y yo creamos, muchos de los eventos representados están inspirados en situaciones reales que hemos vivido o en conversaciones que hemos tenido.

Por ejemplo, el sketch en el que se me ve bebiendo varios gin-tonics (llevándome de cero a bilingüe en un corto espacio de tiempo) realmente ocurrió a principios de este año cuando estábamos en España celebrando el cumpleaños de Javi. Al principio estaba bastante tímida con sus amigos, ¡pero rápidamente aprendí que un poco de alcohol ayudaba mucho!

El otro caso real que vemos en el vídeo es el gusto de Javi por correr descalzo. Realmente ha corrido carreras descalzo en el pasado, y sigue insistiendo en que es más natural y sano para el pie, y sale a correr descalzo siempre que puede. Fue una de las primeras cosas que aprendí sobre él cuando nos estábamos conociendo, ¡y aún sigo pensando que es un rarito ("Weird-O") por hacerlo!

#0 Break a Leg / Mucha Mierda

Last night we officially launched the CHATconJK YouTube channel - hurray!

Above you will see our pilot episode. If you haven't had a chance to watch it yet, check it out.

In this episode we take a look at the Spanish expression "mucha mierda" or in English, "break a leg" - two phrases that are commonly used to wish someone luck, but sound very funny to non-native speakers.

We were interested in finding out what the origins of these expressions were. This is what we learned:

While no definitive origin has been agreed upon, "mucha mierda" is said to have come from the days when wealthy people would travel to theatres via horse and carriage. A play was said to be successful, the more horse excrement found outside the theatre, as it meant that rich people were attending the show. As a result, people would wish those performing "mucha mierda" or "a lot of shit" in the hope that the play would attract a lot of wealthy people. Read more here.

The English expression "break a leg" on the other hand, apparently stems from theatrical superstition where it was believed that it was unlucky to wish people "good luck". People instead, opted for the words "break a leg" to wish someone luck in an ironic kind of way. See more about this here.

Anoche estrenamos oficialmente el canal de YouTube CHATconJK - ¡hurra!

Ahí encima se puede ver nuestro episodio piloto. Si no lo has visto aún, échale un vistazo.

En este episodio veremos la expresión española "mucha mierda", o en inglés "break a leg" - dos frases que se usan comúnmente para desear a alguien suerte, pero que suenan muy cómicas a los hablantes no nativos.

Nos interesamos en buscar los orígenes de las expresiones. Esto es lo que hemos aprendido:

Aunque aún no hay consenso sobre su origen, se dice que "mucha mierda" viene de los días cuando la gente de la clase alta iba a los teatros en carros de caballos. Una obra se consideraría exitosa cuanto más excremento de caballo hubiera fuera del teatro, ya que significaba que mucha gente había ido a verla. Como resultado, la gente le desearía a la actuación "mucha mierda" o "a lot of shit" con la esperanza de que pudiera atraer a mucha gente de la clase alta. Lee más aquí.

La expresión inglesa "break a leg", "romperse una pierna", por otro lado, surge aparentemente de la superstición en las artes escénicas de que se creía que daba mala suerte desear a alguien "buena suerte". Por tanto la gente, obtaba por las palabras "rómpete una pierna" para desear a alguien suerte de una manera un tanto irónica. Lee más sobre esto aquí.

Introducing CHATconJK / Presentando CHATconJK

If you're reading this, then hopefully that means you found us via our 'Chat con JK' YouTube channel!

We set up the channel, in the hope of providing viewers (both English and Spanish speakers alike) with entertaining content that will double up as being a little bit educational too.

Both myself and Javi are language learners - I have been learning Spanish for the past 7 months and Javi has been learning English for about 14 years - so creating these videos is also an opportunity for us to learn more about the languages we are learning, as well as for the benefit of our viewers.

We will be posting extra content on this blog, with little anecdotes based around the episodes we produce as well as anything else that we think you might find interesting, so please keep checking back for updates!
